King Charles III of the United Kingdom said at a White House dinner that Donald Trump had recently stated that if the United States had not existed, European countries would be speaking German.
Charles added: “I say that, if it wasn’t for us, you would be speaking French.”
He referred to the French as “cousins” and said that the United States and the United Kingdom are very fond of them, and that all three countries are bound by shared values.
Donald Trump had previously said, referring to the United States’ role in World War II, that if America had not entered the war, Europe would today be speaking German.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, he said: “And then after the war, which we won—we won it big—without us, right now you’d all be speaking German and a little Japanese, perhaps.”
During World War II, Germany advanced rapidly in territorial expansion, but in the later stages these gains slowed and were reversed.
