Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, said during a visit to Cyprus that he was not involved in politics before his presidency and will not play a role after it ends.
Macron, who became France’s president in 2017 at the age of 39, cannot run for a third term in next year’s presidential election.
Defending his record, he told students at a French school in Cyprus: “After nine years, you have to hold onto what you’ve done well and try to go further, but sometimes you have to fix things you’ve done wrong.”
He said balancing achievements with unfinished reforms is the most challenging part of his final term.
Macron served as France’s economy minister from 2014 to 2016 and is now considered one of the most prominent political figures in Europe.
