U.S. media report that the United States plans to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December in Miami, although no formal invitation has yet been sent.
The Washington Post, citing a U.S. State Department official, reported that Trump has explicitly said Russia can take part in all G20 meetings.
The source said: “No formal invitations have been issued at this time, but Russia is a G-20 member and will be invited to attend ministerial meetings and the leaders’ summit”
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office hours earlier, the U.S. president said he was not aware of such an invitation but would not oppose it. He described Putin’s participation in the G20 summit as “very useful” and said he believes dialogue should be held with everyone.
The G20 is a forum comprising 19 of the world’s largest economies along with the European Union and the African Union. The G20 leaders’ summit is held annually and provides an opportunity for global leaders to discuss major and pressing issues.
Russia has not attended in-person G20 meetings since 2019—initially due to the COVID-19 pandemic and later because of its invasion of Ukraine and an arrest warrant issued against Putin by the International Criminal Court.
