The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced in Saturday that two armed boats belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), without establishing radio contact, opened fire on an oil tanker in the northeast of Oman.
A map published by the organization shows that the incident took place in the Strait of Hormuz.
UKMTO stated that the targeted tanker and its crew are safe, and authorities are currently investigating the incident.
This event was reported at a time when several countries say Iran uses this waterway as a political tool.
Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters announced today that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz has “returned to its previous state.” Previously, Iran had only limitedly allowed ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz was reportedly closed again by Iran while the naval blockade of the country’s ports by the United States is still ongoing.
