Reuters, citing a source familiar with the matter, reported that back-channel talks aimed at reducing tensions between the United States and Iran have made progress, bringing both sides closer to a potential agreement that could be discussed in the next round of negotiations.
Pakistan, which hosted the first round of US–Iran talks, is seeking to reduce differences between the two countries. Pakistan’s army chief visited Tehran on Wednesday to convey Washington’s message and discuss upcoming negotiations with Iranian officials.
A senior Iranian source told Reuters that General Munir is trying to bridge the gap between the two sides.
The White House has referred to Pakistan as the “sole mediator” and said that if a new round of US–Iran talks takes place, they will be held in Islamabad.
The first round of Tehran–Washington negotiations was held in Islamabad but ended without any agreement. Reuters said Iran’s nuclear ambitions remain one of the main obstacles to reaching a deal.
According to the report, the United States proposed that Iran suspend all nuclear activities for 20 years, while Tehran suggested a suspension of 3 to 5 years.
The report added that Washington also insisted on the removal of all enriched uranium from Iran, while Iran demanded the lifting of international sanctions against the country.
