The Artemis II capsule carrying four crew members safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean early this morning (Saturday, April 11), marking the end of a mission that was the first human journey near the Moon in about half a century.
The capsule landed at around 4:30 a.m.
The Artemis II astronauts spent about 10 days in space, traveling as far as approximately 405,000 kilometers from Earth—the farthest distance humans have ever reached in space.
In 1970, the crew of Apollo 13 traveled about 399,000 kilometers from Earth.
Artemis II is the first crewed mission in the Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the surface of the Moon.
