Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York City, said that after receiving official reports about the U.S. military’s detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, he spoke with Donald Trump by phone to express his “explicit opposition” to the action.
Mamdani said his opposition was based on “rejecting regime-change policies, violations of federal and international law, and opposing a unilateral attack on a sovereign nation.” The New York mayor added that he received no concrete response from Trump, but his stance was “clearly on record.”
Mamdani also wrote on X that a unilateral attack on a sovereign country constitutes a “warlike action” and violates both domestic and international law. He warned that this overt attempt at regime change not only affects developments abroad but directly impacts New Yorkers, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans living in the city.
Yesterday, the United States detained Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in an operation inside the country and transferred him to the U.S. to face drug-related chargesa move that has prompted strong international backlash and accusations of violating Venezuela’s sovereignty.
