Syria’s state news agency, SANA, reported that an explosion at a mosque in the city of Homs killed at least five people and injured 21 others.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Friday, Dec. 26, during Friday prayers at the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque.
SANA added that rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, and the wounded were taken to nearby hospitals.
The cause of the explosion remains unclear, and investigations have been launched.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K.-based monitoring group, confirmed the blast but said it is not yet clear whether it was a suicide attack.
Security sources told SANA that preliminary investigations indicate the explosion was caused by explosives planted inside the mosque.
