The Thai Army announced on Monday (December 8th) that the country has launched airstrikes along its disputed border with Cambodia.
According to Thai officials, the attacks occurred after Cambodian forces shot at Thai positions, killing one soldier and wounding four others.
Mali Suchita, the spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense, confirmed to Agence France-Presse (AFP) that Thai forces carried out an attack this morning against their troops in the border provinces of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey.
She added that Cambodia has not yet launched a retaliatory response.
The Thai Army said that Cambodian forces fired ‘BM-21’ type rockets toward civilian areas in the country. A report on the potential casualties from this incident has not yet been made public.
The two sides engaged in a five-day clash in July, which resulted in the deaths of 48 people and the temporary displacement of 300,000. At that time, a ceasefire agreement was signed between Cambodia and Thailand, mediated by Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, and Donald Trump, the U.S. President. Trump later witnessed the signing of a broader peace agreement between the two sides in October.
Last month, Thailand announced that it had suspended the ceasefire agreement after a Thai soldier was injured by a landmine explosion.
Thailand and Cambodia have been in dispute over points along their 817-kilometer border for over a century. This long-standing tension has occasionally led to conflict.
