Pakistani officials stated that five police officers, including a driver, were killed today (Tuesday, December 23) in an attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
According to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police, the attackers first targeted the vehicle carrying the officers with an improvised explosive device, then opened fire directly.
No group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.
Reuters reported that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, saying, “The police have always been on the frontlines in the fight against terrorism.”
The attack took place in the Karak area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a region that has remained relatively untouched by militant attacks.
Last Friday, a military outpost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was attacked, killing four Pakistani soldiers. Pakistan stated that the attack had been planned in Afghanistan and summoned a Taliban diplomat hours after the incident.
The mountainous regions across the Durand Line have long been a base for Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan militants, who have been fighting the Pakistani government for nearly 20 years.
