George Foreman, the legendary heavyweight boxer known for his crushing power and remarkable comeback to the ring, passed away last night at the age of 76 in a hospital in Houston, United States. Foreman’s professional career spanned more than three decades, earning him numerous titles and unforgettable bouts against boxing giants such as Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

A former “street tough” in his youth, Foreman entered the world of boxing at 17 and quickly showed extraordinary talent. In 1968—only a year and a half after he began training—he won the Olympic heavyweight gold medal in Mexico City by knocking out Jonas Čepulis of the Soviet Union in the second round.

Riding an undefeated record of 37 straight wins, Foreman faced reigning heavyweight champion Joe Frazier in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1973. Despite being considered the underdog, he stunned the world by knocking Frazier down six times and claiming the world title in the second round.

The victory, immortalized by commentator Howard Cosell’s iconic cry—“Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!”—turned Foreman into a global superstar.

“The Rumble in the Jungle”

The defining moment of Foreman’s career came in 1974, when he went up against Muhammad Ali in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) in the historic fight known as The Rumble in the Jungle.

Foreman, entering as the defending champion and overwhelming favorite, was outmaneuvered by Ali’s famous “rope-a-dope” strategy. Ali absorbed Foreman’s attacks against the ropes, drained his energy, and knocked him out with a left-right combination in the eighth round.

The loss marked Foreman’s first professional defeat and ended his brief reign atop the heavyweight division.

Muhammad Ali, the greatest heavyweight of all time, passed away on January 17, 2016, at age 74.

Foreman continued fighting after the Ali bout. In 1976, he defeated Joe Frazier for a second time. But in 1977, after losing to Jimmy Young, he retired at age 28, citing a spiritual awakening.

His passion for the ring eventually pulled him back. In 1987, after a decade away, he returned to boxing with the goal of reclaiming the heavyweight title.

Despite widespread doubt, Foreman proved that age was just a number. In 1991, at 42, he fought reigning champion Evander Holyfield. Although he lost by decision, his performance showed he still belonged among the elite.

His comeback reached its peak in 1994, when at age 45, he faced Michael Moorer. Trailing on the scorecards, Foreman unleashed a decisive right hand in the tenth round, knocking Moorer out and reclaiming the heavyweight championship—making him the oldest heavyweight champion in history.

His final fight, a close loss to Shannon Briggs, came in 1997. Foreman retired for good at age 48.

With a professional record of 76 wins and 5 losses, Foreman is widely regarded as one of the top 10 heavyweight boxers of all time and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003.

His fights against legends such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and Evander Holyfield not only showcased his power but also cemented his status as a symbol of resilience and determination. His death marks the end of a golden era in boxing, but his legacy in the ring will endure forever.

Mike Tyson, another icon of the sport, offered condolences to Foreman’s family on X, emphasizing that “his impact on boxing and beyond will never be forgotten.”
