The Taliban said Pakistan expelled 4,192 Afghan migrants on Wednesday (April 15).

According to the Taliban’s High Commission for Refugee Affairs, 3,677 of the migrants returned via the Torkham crossing, while the rest entered through the Spin Boldak crossing.

The pace of deportations of Afghan migrants has increased in recent days, with around 3,000 to 4,000 people entering the country daily from Pakistan.

Since 2023, more than 5.5 million Afghan migrants have returned from Iran and Pakistan, placing unprecedented pressure on the country’s already fragile economy.

Migrants are returning while Afghanistan faces multiple overlapping crises, which the Taliban has struggled to manage.

Urban populations, rent prices, and unemployment have risen due to the large-scale return of migrants. For example, the population of Jalalabad has doubled over the past two years to around 600,000 people, while house rents that were previously 4,000 AFN have increased to as much as 8,000 AFN.
