Tom Cruise, the renowned Hollywood star, once again thrilled audiences with the opening-night premiere of Final Countdown at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. The film, the eighth installment in the popular Mission: Impossible franchise and the follow-up to Dead Reckoning Part One, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, is the biggest Hollywood production featured at this year’s festival and received an enthusiastic response.
The Cannes Film Festival began on Tuesday, 13 May, and will continue for twelve days. It is one of the world’s most prestigious cinema events, held annually in the city of Cannes, France.
The film was screened out of competition on 14 May at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. Cruise’s arrival at the premiere, broadcast live on the venue’s big screen, generated a wave of excitement among attendees. Reports mention a 5- to 7.5-minute standing ovation after the screening. Before entering the theater, he spent several minutes signing autographs for eager fans lined along the road.
Despite speculation that Cruise might arrive with a dramatic stunt similar to the jet flyover at the 2022 premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, he and the cast walked the red carpet accompanied by an orchestra performing the classic Mission: Impossible theme. Entering the theater, Cruise shouted “Bravo!” in praise of the musicians.
A Film Full of High-Intensity Action
Final Countdown, a global story focused on saving the world and filled with spectacular action sequences, serves as the culmination of the franchise’s apocalyptic artificial-intelligence narrative. The film, heavily driven by Cruise’s charisma and determination, received mostly positive early reactions following its Cannes screening. Speaking onstage, Cruise reflected on his 30-year journey with the franchise and said: “Being here in Cannes and experiencing moments like this felt unimaginable. I’m deeply grateful that this series has entertained you.”
Final Countdown will be released in North American cinemas on 23 May.
In interviews, Cruise once again emphasized his passion for performing dangerous and complex stunts, stating: “Facing the unknown excites me; it’s not paralyzing.” This attitude is once again evident throughout Final Countdown.
This marks Cruise’s third major appearance at Cannes. He previously attended in 1992 with Far and Away and in 2022 with Top Gun: Maverick, when he received an honorary Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement. Now, in 2025, with the opening-night premiere of Mission: Impossible – Final Countdown at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, Cruise once again reinforces his status as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
