Local Taliban officials said on Friday that nine people drowned in Nangarhar and Helmand provinces. The bodies of five victims have been recovered, while four others remain missing.
Sayed Tayyib Hamad, spokesman for the Taliban police command in Nangarhar, said three young men drowned and died in Mohmand Dara and Nazyan districts.
According to him, the bodies were recovered from the water and handed over to their families.
Abdul Bari Rashid, the Taliban’s director of information and culture in Helmand, said that on Friday, a man was transporting six female members of his family by vehicle from one area to another and briefly stopped near the Helmand River.
He said that during the stop, one of the women was swept away by the water, and five other women attempted to rescue her. As a result, the first woman and one other person survived, but two women died and two others remain missing.
Rashid said search operations for the two missing women are ongoing. He added that in the village of Sorkh Doz in Nawa district, two children also drowned in the Helmand River, but their bodies have not yet been found.
