Tarig Ali Bakheet, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for Afghanistan, said that the country is in a critical phase and requires sustained international attention.
He called for urgent and practical measures to reduce humanitarian suffering in Afghanistan and stabilize the country’s economic situation.
Bakheet made the remarks in a speech at a meeting on Afghanistan held in Istanbul, saying that humanitarian assistance to the country in the areas of health and food security must continue.
He also stressed the need for a coordinated easing of restrictions on banking channels and the provision of alternative livelihoods to support families and prevent further economic deterioration.
The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation reiterated the organization’s commitment to continuing constructive dialogue and close cooperation with all international parties to strengthen stability and lay the necessary foundations for Afghanistan’s recovery and reconstruction.
The “Coordination Group on Afghanistan” meeting, where Bakheet spoke, was held from April 28 to 30 in Istanbul. Published images show that Georgette Gagnon, the head of UNAMA, also attended the meeting.
