Pakistani media reported that Afghan Taliban forces opened fire on a “residential area” in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Sunday, wounding three people, including a female police officer.
According to the reports, Pakistani forces on the same day “destroyed” Taliban positions involved in the attack.
Pakistan’s state television said the condition of two of the injuries was stable, while the third remains in critical condition.
Security sources told Dawn newspaper that Taliban forces were attempting to help a group of TTP members cross from Afghanistan into Pakistan.
The sources said that due to the “swift action of military forces, all infiltration attempts were thwarted.”
Tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan, which had persisted for months, escalated into an “open conflict” in early March; a conflict that was only temporarily paused during Eid al-Fitr and has since continued, at times intensifying and at times occurring sporadically.
The two sides held talks for a week in Urumqi, China, but failed to reach a solution to end the hostilities.
