Hannah Neumann, a member of the European Parliament, reacting to the European Union’s preparations to invite the Taliban to Brussels, the capital of Belgium, said that “EU officials rolling out the red carpet for the Taliban in Brussels.”
She added that the Taliban has no legitimacy and that no backdoor deals should be made with the group.
Agence France-Presse and the news website Euractiv have reported that the European Union plans to invite a Taliban delegation in the coming weeks for talks on the deportation of Afghan migrants from the bloc.
The delegation is expected to be hosted in Belgium’s capital.
Neumann stressed that recognizing the Taliban in exchange for deporting Afghan migrants is “a recipe for disaster.”
Euractiv reported that the Taliban delegation would be “technical” in nature and would not include political figures.
European countries are seeking to deport Afghan migrants who do not have legal residency status or who have committed crimes. Germany has previously deported around 100 individuals.
