The Taliban Interior Ministry said the group has arrested Shapoor Hussainzoi, a former member of Afghanistan’s House of Representatives.
Hussainzoi wrote on his Facebook page that he was detained “illegally” despite having received a protection card from the Taliban commission for “contact with personalities.”
However, Rahimullah Baryal, deputy spokesman for the Taliban Interior Ministry, rejected the claim and said the arrest was related to the “beating of his wife to the point of death.”
Baryal added that the victim’s wife had filed a complaint against him and that the case has now been referred to a Taliban court.
He said the former lawmaker’s Facebook statements were intended “to clear his name.”
Hussainzoi also wrote on his Facebook page that his two young children had been “abducted” and that the Taliban ignored his requests to find them.
He claimed his children have left the country, while their identity documents and passports are in his possession. He also alleged that the complainant is currently in Iran and has links with the Taliban Interior Ministry investigator.
