Nurlan Yermekbayev, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), told the state news agency TASS that member states are continuously monitoring the situation in Afghanistan.

He added that SCO members are currently reviewing the situation in Afghanistan and acknowledge that the country has an impact on the overall regional situation.

Yermekbayev noted that many SCO member states share borders with Afghanistan.

He said: “Previously, we had an active SCO contact group on Afghanistan. Although this group has suspended its activities, Afghanistan remains in the focus of our organization.”

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization has nine permanent members: Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Among these countries, only Russia has recognized the Taliban.
