The Taliban’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum said in a statement that about 25 kilometers of the TAPI gas pipeline have so far been built within Afghanistan, and a 120-kilometer route has been prepared for the continuation of the project.
According to the statement, technical equipment and new pipes are being transported to the project site, which will play an important role in accelerating the work.
The ministry said it expects 153 kilometers of the pipeline in Herat province to be completed by the end of 2026.
The statement added that the Taliban are committed to advancing the project according to the set timeline and making it ready for operation after completion.
The TAPI project, considered one of the region’s key economic initiatives, plays an important role in energy transmission, economic growth, and strengthening regional cooperation.
Turkmenistan’s president had earlier said during his visit to Afghanistan that the country would earn one billion dollars annually (63.98 billion AFN) from the TAPI project.
Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s deputy prime minister for economic affairs, said at the time (about five and a half months ago) that practical work on the project in Afghanistan had progressed by 14 kilometers.
The TAPI gas pipeline will be 1,814 kilometers long, of which 830 kilometers will be constructed within Afghanistan.
