Adam Boehler, the US president’s special envoy for hostage affairs, said Dennis Coyle, a US citizen, was freed from Taliban custody following months of quiet diplomacy.
He made the remarks in a video posted on X showing the moment Coyle stepped off an airplane that had transported him to the United States.
Boehler wrote: “Getting to witness this homecoming after everything Dennis Coyle endured is why we do this job”
Dennis Coyle, who had worked in Afghanistan for years, was detained by the Taliban in early 2025 and held for over a year.
He was released from Taliban custody on Tuesday.
In an interview after his release, he said that the people of Afghanistan are “not all evil” and that many are simply trying to get by.
The United States believes that at least two other American citizens remain detained in Afghanistan.
