The Afghanistan Journalists Center has recorded at least 207 incidents of violations against media freedom and violence targeting journalists during the year March 2025-March 2026.
According to the organization’s report, these incidents include the killing of two journalists, one injury, and 183 cases of threats—among them 21 arrests. The report states that the Taliban have intensified their control over media outlets, with suppression and censorship increasing to an “unprecedented” level.
It also notes that from March 2024 to March 2025, bans on broadcasting images of living beings and on video interviews with Taliban officials were enforced in seven provinces. In 2025-2026, these restrictions expanded to 18 additional provinces.During the same year, broadcasts of at least 21 local television stations were suspended due to alleged violations of the ban on airing images of living beings.
Additionally, eight media outlets and journalist organizations were forced to cease operations for not complying with Taliban media policies, and the licenses of at least 10 media and journalistic entities were revoked.
