The Taliban have requested that the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation provide female prisoners in Afghanistan with sports equipment and hygiene supplies. They also called for adequate food, establishment of health centers, upgrading of existing medical facilities, and installation of solar panels to supply electricity to the prisons.
The Taliban’s Prison Administration said in a statement that Eric Markel, the Swiss development representative in Afghanistan, assured that these requests would be considered. During the meeting, Mohammad Bilal Fateh, deputy head of the Taliban Prison Administration, and other officials discussed the conditions of prisoners, the protection of their human rights, and related matters.
Bilal Fateh claimed that Taliban-run prisons have been transformed into “rehabilitation and educational centers,” providing both religious and modern education, while asserting that all “religious and human rights” of inmates are observed.
According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as of 10 Aban 1404 (solar calendar), between 30,000 and 32,000 people were reportedly held in Taliban custody.
