The Taliban’s Supreme Court announced that the group’s forces executed one person today (Tuesday, December 2nd) at the sports club in the center of Khost province
The Taliban “executed” the individual, who was accused of the “premeditated murder” of a person named Abdul Rahman, a native resident of Khost province.
The Taliban’s Supreme Court said in a statement that the case had been thoroughly and repeatedly reviewed by the group’s Primary, Appeals, and High (Tameez) Courts, as well as by Hibatullah Akhundzada.
According to the statement, the victim’s family did not accept the offer of peace and forgiveness, and the execution verdict for the accused was ultimately issued.
Taliban officials and a number of Khost residents were present at the execution ceremony.
The Taliban’s Supreme Court said that Hibatullah had ordered two other individuals to also be executed, but the sentence was postponed because the victims’ family members live abroad.
Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, called for a halt to public executions by the Taliban in response to the execution in Khost.
Bennett said that executing individuals in public view is an “inhumane and cruel” act and is contrary to international law.
