The Taliban’s High Commission for Refugee Affairs says that Pakistan expelled 2,540 Afghan migrants yesterday (Friday, November 28).
According to the commission, the individuals returned through the Torkham crossing in Nangarhar, Spin Boldak in Kandahar, and Bahramcha in Helmand.
Taliban figures indicate that since November 1, a total of 234,103 Afghans have been forcibly returned from Pakistan.
Despite heightened tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan, Islamabad has — for unclear reasons — gradually reduced the pace of deportations in recent days.
While Pakistan had been expelling around 10,000 people per day, the number has dropped sharply, with just over 2,500 people returned yesterday.
Iran has also continued — though less aggressively — the expulsion of Afghan migrants, deporting 310 people yesterday through Islam Qala and Pul-e Abrisham.
Those who return to Afghanistan face rising poverty and unemployment. Some returning women and girls say they feel they have entered a “prison,” as the Taliban have imposed severe social restrictions on them.
