The European Union and Uzbekistan discussed Afghanistan during the 18th meeting of the “EU–Uzbekistan Cooperation Council.”
Both sides expressed concern about the humanitarian and human-rights situation in Afghanistan, especially the conditions of women and girls. They also underscored the importance of regional stability and cooperation in countering terrorism.
The meeting was held yesterday in Luxembourg, with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov in attendance. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the UN Charter and to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The European Union has consistently called on the Taliban to respect human rights and to establish an inclusive government. Uzbekistan, Afghanistan’s northern neighbor, has maintained close engagement with the Taliban despite not recognizing the group.
