Donald Trump, speaking at a public event, once again criticized the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan, saying the United States left behind two percent of its military equipment in the country.
He said: “We left some military equipment behind, although it was actually very little. It may seem like a lot, but it was only two percent of what we had built.”
Trump said he rebuilt the U.S. military during his first term in office, but did not know that during his second term “he would use this much of it.”
He described the abandonment of U.S. military equipment in Afghanistan as “sad” and said it should never have happened.
The U.S. president stressed: “We wanted to leave. We were supposed to leave easily. We could have won… [We intended] to leave with great pride.”
Since returning to the White House, Trump has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
He has also ordered the Pentagon to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the withdrawal, the results of which are expected to be released publicly soon.
Trump had previously said the United States should not have abandoned Bagram Air Base and had even raised the idea of retaking the base.
