Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs of the Taliban, claimed in a meeting with the UK Special Representative for Afghanistan that the country’s economic situation has “significantly improved compared to the past.”
He also said that economic cooperation between the Taliban and neighboring and regional countries has expanded.
The Taliban’s Economic Deputy Office said in a statement yesterday that Abdul Ghani Baradar met with Richard Lindsay, the UK Special Representative for Afghanistan, at his office.
According to the statement, the meeting discussed strengthening coordination and cooperation between the Taliban and the international community, as well as continued humanitarian assistance from the British government and people to Afghanistan.
The Taliban said that Lindsay expressed sympathy for the families of Afghan citizens killed in recent Pakistani military operations and stated that the British government and people would continue their assistance to Afghanistan. Richard Lindsay has not yet commented on the meeting.
The economic picture presented by the Taliban’s deputy prime minister does not align with reports from credible international organizations or with ground realities.
According to the United Nations, nearly half of Afghanistan’s population requires humanitarian assistance, at a time when global aid has been declining.
