Hamid Karzai, former President of Afghanistan, has once again called for the reopening of schools and universities for girls, amid the Taliban’s continued disregard.
He said that the ban on girls’ education would weaken national capacity and increase Afghanistan’s dependence on foreign countries.
In a post on social media, Karzai said: “While I consider education vital, I once again emphasize that schools and universities must be opened for girls as soon as possible.”
He added: “By providing education and learning opportunities for youth, both girls and boys, the country’s problems and needs can be resolved by the capable hands of its own children, and Afghanistan can become free from external dependence.”
Karzai referred to a UNICEF report stating that if Taliban restrictions on women’s work and education continue, Afghanistan could lose 20,000 teachers and 5,400 female healthcare workers by 2030.
