Taliban officials have said that eight members of a family were killed last night in an earthquake in Bagrami district of Kabul province. According to the spokesperson of the group’s Ministry of Public Health, only a three-year-old child named Arash survived from the family, which had recently returned from Iran.
Sharafat Zaman wrote on his X account: “Arash, an almost three-year-old child, lost eight members of his family, including his parents, brothers, and sisters, in last night’s earthquake in the Gosfand Dara area of Kabul. Only this little flower remains, and he has suffered a severe head injury.”
He added: “The most painful part for me was seeing this child in pain. A mother’s embrace is usually a source of comfort, but Arash has been deprived of this comfort and is spending his moments in a painful state… Arash still does not know that his mother is no longer in this world.”
Sharafat Zaman stressed that the Taliban Ministry of Public Health leadership has instructed medical staff to provide the child with proper care until full recovery.
A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province at 8:42 p.m. last night, with tremors felt across many provinces, including Kabul.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 186 kilometers.
