The Freedom Front said the Taliban would pay a heavy price for their actions after the group reportedly exhumed the grave and fired on the body of Zafar, a Resistance Front commander who had recently died.
The Freedom Front described Zafar as a “comrade-in-arms” and a “freedom fighter,” saying that firing on his body reflected the Taliban’s “weakness, humiliation and anger” in the face of “growing public dissatisfaction with the group’s rule” in northern Afghanistan.
In its statement, the group also condemned gunfire against protesters who had opposed mining activities by Taliban-linked companies in Takhar and Badakhshan Provinces, saying several people were killed and wounded during the crackdown.
Referring to both incidents, the Freedom Front said, “The honeymoon of the cowardly and usurping Taliban militias and the merchants of death in the north of the country has come to an end.”
In recent days, local residents in the Chah Ab district of Takhar have reportedly protested what they describe as “excessive and predatory” mining by Taliban-contracted companies. Videos circulated on social media appear to show gunfire during the demonstrations.
The Taliban has not commented on the reports.
Resistance Front Reaction
The National Resistance Front issued a separate statement late last night, calling the exhumation of Zafar’s grave “cowardly and inhumane.”
“The Taliban’s repeated desecration of the bodies of resistance martyrs shows that this group has been defeated in the realm of ethics, dignity and human legitimacy,” the statement said. “An enemy that fears even the lifeless bodies of freedom fighters is, in fact, displaying its own helplessness and despair through such unforgivable crimes.”
The Resistance Front accused the Taliban of violating the ethics of warfare, humanitarian principles and religious norms, and warned that it would hold the group accountable for what it described as acts of desecration and abuse.
