Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, responding to the “National Unity” meeting, said the group’s opponents should return to Afghanistan instead of “plotting against the country.”
In a television interview, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, said the group has already “tested” its opponents and there is no need to give them any more opportunities.
Mujahid added that the Taliban had listened to the statements of opposition leaders at the “National Unity” meeting and insisted that these individuals must cease their “stance against their own country.”
He claimed that these leaders had taken part in the civil wars following the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, “stood against the people,” and created conditions in which “schoolchildren had to leave their books on the shelves and rise against them.”
Mujahid accused the opposition leaders of being responsible for the “misfortunes” that have arisen since 1992. He said they must understand that they are no longer “accepted by the people” and have “lost their chance.”
“They are effectively powerless,” he added, asserting that the Taliban are strong enough to prevent them from achieving their goals.
Earlier, four Afghan political groups the High Council of Resistance, the National Salvation Assembly, the National Movement for Peace and Justice, and the Resistance Front issued a statement on December 9 following an online meeting called “National Unity.”
In the declaration, the groups called for the formation of a legitimate government in Afghanistan through “intra-Afghan dialogue” and invited the Taliban to the negotiating table.
