Russian President Vladimir Putin and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon held a phone call to discuss developments in Afghanistan.
The Kremlin said the two leaders emphasized their desire to strengthen strategic ties and cooperation.
The conversation comes as Tajikistan expresses concern over attacks originating from Afghan territory and seeks to bolster security along its shared border.
Reuters previously reported that Tajikistan had requested Russian assistance to secure the frontier, a claim that was denied by Dushanbe.
Until the early 2000s, Tajik and Russian forces jointly guarded the Tajik-Afghan border. In 2005, Tajikistan assumed full responsibility for border security.
In the past month alone, at least three attacks originating from Afghanistan targeted Tajikistan, leaving two Tajik soldiers and five Chinese nationals dead.
