Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack on two former Afghan soldiers in Tehran, stating that the country’s security and law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident.
Ismail Baqai, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said that the country is sensitive to any action that threatens its security and will respond firmly.
He added, “The safety of our citizens and of anyone living in Iran whether as a refugee, traveler, or under any other status is of utmost importance to us.”
Baqai emphasized that Iran will “under no circumstances” allow the security of people residing in the country to be compromised.
He expressed condolences to the families of Ekramuddin Sari and Amin Almas, the former soldiers, stating, “Such acts are certainly condemnable, and our relevant security and law enforcement authorities are pursuing the matter. The diplomatic apparatus will also intervene if necessary.”
On Wednesday, December 24, the two former soldiers were targeted in a shooting at Vali Asr Square in Tehran and later died. Most opponents of the Taliban condemned the incident and called on the Iranian government to investigate it thoroughly. Some political figures have held members of the Taliban responsible for the attack.
Several days later, the Taliban has not issued any response to the incident.
