The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) announced in its report yesterday that the U.S. has provided 253.239 billion Afghanis ($3.38 billion) in aid to Afghanistan since the Taliban came to power.

According to the report, the U.S. has remained Afghanistan’s largest financial supporter, providing 7.934 billion Afghanis ($120 million) in aid to the country in the first three months of 2025 alone.

SIGAR emphasized that the U.S. spent this money on Afghanistan for humanitarian and development purposes.

SIGAR’s previous report, published in March, indicates that although the transfer of U.S. cash to Afghanistan has helped stabilize the country’s economy, the Taliban has also benefited from this process.

The agency added that from 2002 to mid-2021, the United States allocated 8 trillion 567 billion and 564 million Afghanis ($144.7 billion) for the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

Since its establishment in 2009, SIGAR has documented 1,327 instances of waste, fraud, and abuse, estimated to be worth between 1 trillion 719 billion and 120 million Afghanis ($26 billion) and 1 trillion 930 billion and 704 million Afghanis ($29.2 billion). Waste was the most common problem identified, accounting for 93 percent of the recorded cases.

According to the report, U.S. Department of Defense documents showed that the Afghan Air Force had 162 U.S.-provided aircraft in its possession up to two weeks before the collapse of the Republic government, 131 of which were operational.
