Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, emphasized the necessity of dialogue with the Taliban today (Tuesday, December 3rd) during his press briefing in India
He said that Afghanistan is of great importance and is now bordering former Soviet republics. Peskov added, “Afghanistan also borders Tajikistan. Our border guards are still present there. Therefore, we must talk to Afghanistan (the Taliban).”
He did not specify the areas in which Russia seeks dialogue with the Taliban.
The Kremlin spokesman emphasized that Russia is expanding its relations with the Taliban because the two sides have common interests in the region. He said that Moscow will continue to expand its ties with the Taliban.
The Taliban, four years after their return to power, have only been recognized by Russia. Other countries were expected to follow Russia’s lead in this regard.
Regional countries believe that terrorist groups are present in Afghanistan and pose a threat to them.
Russia says that 20 terrorist groups with 15,000 fighters are operating in Afghanistan.
