Afghanistan’s national cricket team claimed a remarkable victory today at the Champions Trophy, defeating the powerful England side by 8 runs.

Afghanistan delivered an impressive performance, posting 325 runs in 50 overs, while England fell short with 317 runs, handing Afghanistan a crucial win.

The Champions Trophy consists of two groups—A and B—each featuring four teams. Group A includes India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, while Group B consists of Afghanistan, South Africa, Australia, and England. The top four teams across both groups advance to the semifinals. With this victory over England, Afghanistan has significantly boosted its chances of progressing to the next stage.

Earlier in the tournament, Afghanistan faced South Africa and lost by a margin of 107 runs.

Today’s match went ahead despite earlier calls for the fixture between Afghanistan and England to be cancelled—a request that was ultimately rejected by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
