The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a report released today that in 2025, a total of 1,492 Afghan migrants died during migration journeys in different parts of the world.
According to the report, the causes of death for 912 Afghan citizens included illness, lack of access to adequate healthcare services, and traffic accidents.
The report added that in 2025 alone, 1,323 Afghan citizens died while crossing the border from Afghanistan into Iran. In addition, 102 Afghan citizens died during their return journeys from Iran and Pakistan.
The report also stated that 32 Afghan citizens lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea last year while attempting to reach Europe.
The IOM said that most Afghan migrants who died along migration routes were adult men.
It further noted that at least 2,722 people from the Asia-Pacific region died or went missing on migration routes in 2025. The figure stood at 2,745 in 2024.
