The German newspaper Bild reported that after the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, around 38,000 Afghan refugees were resettled in Germany.
According to the report, hosting this number of migrants has cost Germany €200 million.
It is noted that Germany’s Afghan refugee admission program is still ongoing, and since the beginning of 2026 alone, 170 people have been transferred to Germany. Some of them secured entry through court rulings.
In an exclusive report, Bild wrote that between May and December 2025, the costs for housing, food, and medical services for Afghan refugees were estimated at €23.7 million. Airfare costs were reported at €700,000.
Sebastian Münzenmaier, deputy parliamentary group leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, criticized these expenses, saying: “The Merz government came to power with a firm promise to stop all refugee admission programs. Since then, no action has been taken.”
Official figures show that around 442,000 Afghan citizens are currently living in Germany.
