The Taliban announced that the Pakistani government deported 1,447 Afghan migrants yesterday.
The Taliban’s Supreme Commission for Migrant Affairs said that the individuals returned from the Torkham and Spin Boldak border crossings, in that order.
Taliban figures indicate that since November 1, Pakistan has forcibly repatriated 352,211 Afghan migrants.
On November 1st, the Torkham border crossing was reopened to Afghan migrants.
The Taliban said that over the past year, 2.8 million migrants have returned from foreign countries, both voluntarily and forcibly.
Data from the Iranian government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) indicate that at least 4.5 million Afghan migrants remain in Iran and more than 2 million in Pakistan.
Pakistan has largely carried out the deportations due to heightened tensions with the Taliban and claimed security concerns.
Many of those being expelled had initially sought refuge in Pakistan out of fear of the Taliban.
