Deeyar TV Marks the Birthday and Legacy of Ahmad Zahir

Deeyar TV is commemorating the 79th birthday and the 46th anniversary of the passing of Ahmad Zahir, Afghanistan’s iconic artist, in a ceremony in the United States. The program is dedicated to honoring his life and artistic legacy. Known as the “Diamond of the East,” Ahmad Zahir remains one of the most influential figures in Afghanistan’s modern music, with a body of work that continues to live vividly in the cultural memory of Afghans and far beyond.

Born on June 14, 1946, in Deh Mazang, Kabul, he is widely remembered as a unifying figure and a symbol of Afghanistan’s “good days.” Even today, without interruption, he connects people across a vast geography. From Kabul to Washington, and from Dushanbe to Paris, wherever his voice is heard, listeners join him in song.

At the ceremony, Zabiih Jawanmard, a celebrated Afghan artist, will perform Ahmad Zahir’s songs, creating a bridge between today and the era of Ahmad Zahir. The event will also feature Abdullah Etemadi — the timeless arranger of Ahmad Zahir’s music and the jazz musician behind most of his melodies — as the “special guest.” Tabla player Toryalai Hashimi, percussionist Hamid Barez, and keyboardist Yaser Noori will also transport the audience back to the golden days of Ahmad Zahir.

“Where is the beautiful Zahir?” — an enchanting song by Hangama, another shining star of Afghan music. The answer: Zahir lives in our hearts. And the echo of his melodies will fill the George Washington National Memorial Hall on June 22.

Ahmad Zahir’s fame and enduring legacy have even outshined the political prominence of his father, a former prime minister. He became immortal not through politics, but through music.

He completed his primary education at Kabul’s Habibia High School, then traveled to India for further studies in education, earning a master’s degree in that field.

Ahmad Zahir married three times and had two children: Shabnam and Ahmad Rashad.

He drew deeply from the works of Persian literary giants, which contributed to the lasting power of his music. Verses of Rumi, Hafez, Saadi, Bedil, Simin Behbahani, Forough Farrokhzad, Fereydoon Moshiri, and Rahi Moayyeri were performed countless times through his voice.

The brilliant star of Afghan music released more than 33 albums, totaling around 430 songs, with some performed in Pashto, Hindi, and English.

The “Diamond of the East” died at the peak of his youth — on his 33rd birthday — in a mysterious incident inside the Salang Tunnel. While it was officially declared a car accident, testimonies from those close to him suggest the presence of a gunshot wound on his body.
